It’s funny how every kid is so different, even between my own three. With the girls, we started baby food as soon as we got the green light from our pediatrician- at about 4 months old. Isabella was exclusively breastfed, while Sophia was given formula, but both started with rice cereal as their “first food”. This time around though, I’ve decided to try Baby Led Weaning, or as our grandparents called it: eating food.
Quick crash course on Baby Led Weaning if your unfamiliar: Baby Led Weaning, quite simply, means letting your child feed themselves from the very start of weaning.
Everyone warned me how messy BLW is, but so far, it hasn’t been too bad. Of course, that’s probably only because we are still in the “exploring” phase and he’s more interested in feeling the textures in his hands. We’ve tried broccoli, zucchini, apple, banana, pear, pineapple, and strawberry. He’s swiped bites of a bagel and pancake off of my plate, as well as spoonfuls of oatmeal and refried beans.
I’ve learned to not stress so much about mealtime, which may be one of my favorite parts of BLW. No forceful spoon-feeding or worrying about making sure he finishes the jar. I love that he is learning to recognize what food really tastes, looks, and feels like. I’ve also learned that it’s not always practical to have something prepared for him, like nights that we’re grabbing something to-go or when we’re eating something that I think might be a little too spicy for him, which is why I am loving Sprout Organic Baby Food’s new Pouches.
Research shows that developing a love of healthy foods early on helps foster healthy eating habits for life. That’s why Sprout is committed to providing the best nutrition and uses only certified-organic, non-GMO ingredients like whole fruits, vegetables and grains. I really regret now not making a bigger push with the girls, especially Sophia, to eat healthier from the start. Isabella now loves foods like salmon and salad, but it is a struggle with Sophia to make sure she’s getting all of those good nutrients in her diet.
Unlike leading competitors that primarily focus on two flavors (apple or pear); Sprout offers delicious blends of whole fruits, vegetables, and grains giving babies greater exposure to wholesome foods. Sprout varieties include Mango, Spinach Banana Apple, Blueberry Banana Oatmeal, and Pear Spinach Prune. Sprout honestly labels their products so Flavor names match the primary order of ingredients inside. This way Moms knows EXACTLY what they are feeding their babies. Sprout only uses ingredients like those that would be found in your own kitchen – no preservatives and nothing artificial! (Read their Mission & Values here)
I’m looking forward to continuing on with BLW and move into the next phase of eating more than exploring. I’m so excited that these Sprout Pouches are now available at my local Target in Dallas and am thankful for products that help make mealtime stress-free.
